Broad Channel Bits

Well, spring has finally arrived! Did it seem at times that it would never get here? For a while there, I was wondering! Today (Friday) is the first full day of Spring. It actually started at 8 p.m. on Thursday (8 p.m.? Who figures these things out?) Isn't it great the way Nature seems to "spring" to life? It will be so nice to see flowers and other plants blooming again. But the nicest thing is that people will see each other out and about!

On Sunday, April 6 the Easter Bunny is coming to town! He will be at the American Legion Hall at noon on that day for a light breakfast, games and pictures. On Friday, March 28 at 7 p.m. the American Legion will have Championship Poker at the Legion Hall. There is a $100 donation. There will be Prizes.

Food and Spirits will be provided. Call George at 718 634-5795 or Steve 718 945-5948. Sign up early; there is a 100 player limit on a first come, first served basis. Details are on a website: www.broadchannel1.com.

By the way, the above site contains a lot of very useful information. If you're online at home, check it out. If you're not online, the library is and a staff member will help you get the site on the screen. There's a bit of everything on this site. Each person will likely find something of interest to him/her. It's neatly arranged and easy to explore. There are nice photos
on there too.

P.S. 47 NEWS: An oyster gardening program has been started at the school under the leadership of Mrs. Deb Williams, the middle school science teacher, and Michael Stringer. Stringer is a Conservation Associate and Baykeeper from the American Littoral Society.  The students in grade 6 have been studying how organisms live and multiply.  They will garden the oysters into the bay in hopes of increasing the number of oysters in the bay area.  Jamaica Bay, here come the oysters!

The P.S. 47 Parents Association had a Book Fair at the school last week. And there was that annual staple-the Pajama Party-both signs of approaching spring. I had already sent the column to the Wave when I got the two emails asking me to publicize the events. It was the first time that happened and I realized no one knew when my deadline was. I need all information the Monday before the item is to appear. This way no one's news will get left out!

By the way, I got a very nice email from one of P.S. 47's Moms. In part, it
said: "The Parents' Association of P.S. 47 would like to thank all the
students, parents and people in our community who made our Book Fair a success.  We were able to donate $400 in books to the school."
