Beach Volleyball 2003 Season Almost Here
Preparations for the Summer 2003 Rockaway Beach Volleyball League are underway. Patty Moule will again lead her troops into battle and try to top last year’s very successful campaign. This year she’s going to do it without being pregnant. so you may even get to see her play again. Each year the first order of business is to meet and find out which teams will be returning and which will not. Additionally, this is the time for all new individuals and teams to sign up for the new season. As always, there will be several different divisions with varying levels of skill.
Team captains are required to attend our first meeting at the Kerry Hills Pub in Rockaway on Wednesday, 3/26 at 8:00 p.m. All players are welcome as well. Captains should bring a deposit of $50 per team to insure a spot in the league.
Any prospective new referees should come by if you would like to be worked into our rotation. You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.
The general feedback on the 2002 season has been very positive and the league is grateful for everyone’s input. Feel free to attend the first meeting and to voice any of your personal likes and dislikes. We are always striving for improvement.
You can mark a few special dates on your calendars already. Wednesday, 5/21 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Wednesday, 5/28, will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until 8/9. On Saturday, 8/9, the league championships will be played – keep your schedules clear.
It will only be a short few months before the soap opera known as the RBVL tries to answer the questions:
Can Bugsy keep his gang together for a repeat title?
Does Seal have anything left in his gas tank?
Will Generation X&Y re-stock their roster and vie for the championship?
Will the Kerry Hills upstarts make waves in the top division?
It may seem a little cold to be thinking about beach volleyball but opening day will arrive quickly and there is much to be done beforehand. If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule at 718-318-7770 (before 9 PM, please). See you on 3/26.
