SFDS 8th Graders Finish Season 22-1
On March 8, the Saint Francis De Sales 8th Grade intermediate girls basketball team completed their season with a first place win in the SFDS Peggy Boyle Tournament.
The tournament games reflected the team play throughout the season with Caitlin Wheeler owning the battles under the boards, with power forwards Candice Clark and Michelle Raaf providing solid defense and scoring in the lanes away from the basket. Guards Kerri Gallagher and Catherine Warren disrupting the opponent’s offensive surges and controlling the offensive ball movements. The 8th graders fast moving offense and changing defenses were totally supported by Michele Murray and Julia Steinberg alternating between the guard and forward positions, with Jena Hill taking over the center role, and relieving the forward positions were Megan Wheeler and Katie Pareja. In the Peggy Boyle tournament championship game, the SFDS team defeated Corpus Christi of Woodside in an overtime win, 34-32. The win brought the teams season record to twenty-two wins and one defeat. The one loss came in the Queens Borough CYO championship game against a skilled team from Our Lady of Lourdes in Jamaica.
