RAA’s ‘Destinations’ Opens March 22

Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), in proud partnership with the National Park Service/Gateway National Recreation Area, presents "Destinations: Travel to Foreign and Not-So-Foreign Places." The exhibit runs from March 22 through April 27 at sTudio 6 gallery, Fort Tilden/GNRA.

"Destinations" presents works of more than 20 contemporary artists, which explore the subject of destination focusing on different aspects of this word.

The exhibit consists of works in diverse media and genre, unified by a progressive underlying scheme. The show starts from "not-so-foreign," containing works associated with New York neighborhoods and travel in the United States.

It then progresses to "foreign places" with works related to travel in foreign countries.

And finally, it presents works that deal with facets of spiritual travel, contemplating the idea that life itself is a journey and that, on the way to destinations, destinies are found.

Specially selected music accompanies the exhibition, creating a contemplative mood. The exhibition is, itself, a voyage. On the floor of the gallery arrows are drawn to lead the viewer in the direction of the exhibition development. Following the suggested direction, the beholder starts with well-known locations, eventually moving away from those to the distant lands, encountering different people and different ways of living, and culminating his or her "journey" with philosophical and spiritual, even mystical, evocations of life destinations.

All three parts of the exhibition contain landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, abstractions and conceptual works. The viewers have the opportunity to see how similar themes can be presented very differently by means of photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed media. The viewers should leave the show with the feeling that different places are not so different and those familiar are not so familiar.

The opening reception is Sunday, March 23 from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Admission is free to the gallery and reception. Gallery hours are Saturdays 12 noon – 5 p.m., Sundays 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., and by appointment.

"Destinations" is created by independent curator Katherina Romanenko.
