Bishop Kearny Tigers Track Team Shatters Indoor Records
Congratulations to Kearney’s indoor track team, that kicked off their indoor season at the 168th Street Armory in New York City. They shattered the school record in the Distance Medley Relay. The new record holders are senior co-captains Linda Michlik and Cristin Mullen (Belle Harbor) and sophomore sensations Noelle Raffaele and Maribel Rodriguez. The new school record is now 13 minutes, 56 seconds, 40 seconds faster than the old record and a the first time a Kearney team broke the 14-minute barrier.
Linda Michlik had an outstanding performance at the prestigious Women’s Colgate Games and the Metropolitan Athletic Congress Indoor Track Meet. Her performance at the Colgate Games qualified her for the semi-finals, a first for a Kearney runner. The team’s performance at that meet was outstanding! The M&M girls (Mulen and Michlik) led the way. Cristen Mullen’s 2nd place finish in the championship 3000-meter run was also a new school record. Linda Michlik ran an exciting race in the 1500 meter from start to finish and also captured 2nd place honors. The half-mile relay team of Jaima Jumelle, Jessica Lovett (Rockaway Park), Victoria Simon and Merav Davis just missed the school record by 2 seconds. It was great to see senior Jessica Lovett back to her old form, after being sidelined by injuries. Jessica posted a fast 29 seconds for her relay leg.
The Blizzard of 2003 didn’t stop the track team from melting old school records. Cristen Mullen started the assault at the City Championships. Her third place finish in the 300-meter race smashed her one-week-old school record in an outstanding time of 11 minutes 10 seconds. Her efforts qualified her as an alternate in this year’s New York state championships. This is a FIRST for a Bishop Kearney runner in the indoor season.
School records continued to fall with Chrysta Irolla’s performance in the 600-meter race, with a new school record of 1 minute 54 seconds. Maribel Rodriguez smashed the sophomore 600-meter record by 3 seconds in 1 minute 57 seconds. Noelle Raffaele continued to have a great indoor season by setting a new school record on the 1000-meter race with a time of 2 minutes 31 seconds.
The freshman relay squad of Josephine Byrne, Stephanie Stacker, Brianna Pittari and anchor Regina Pynn broke the team’s one-week-old record by 6 seconds, with a time of 5 minutes 24 seconds for the sprint medley. Regina ran a sensational time for a half-mile in 2 minutes 51 seconds - a great time for s freshman.
Our team captains really made Kearney proud last weekend. Linda Michlik’s 4th place finish in an extremely competitive 1500-meter race smashed her own school record in 5 minutes 4 seconds. This places her with the elite women’s 1500-meter runners in New York City. Not to be outdone, Cristen Mullen ran a gutsy 3000-meter run and captured 2nd honors. Congratulations to all the runners and to coach John Lovett (Rockaway Park). Best of luck in the rest of the indoor season!!!
