Far Rockaway Girls Track Continues to Soar
At the mayor’s meet, Jeavon Benjamin won the 600m run with the fastest time in the United States this year and the fastest ever. Setting the all time sophomore record, she ran 130.00. Shellean Fyffe took 3rd in the 300m in 39.8.
At the PSAL city championships, Jeavon Benjamin won the 600m again in 132.00. Shellean Fyffe took a bronze in the 300m dash in 39.8. Michelle Beckford took a bronze in the pole vault.
The 4x200m relay team capped off the day where Shellean Fyffe, Jeavon Benjamin, Aleisha Woodley and Letisha Howard ran the fastest qualifying time getting into the finals with a 143.20. Then in the finals, the girls sped to a gold medal finish winning the city championship 4x2 00m in a state best 141.00. That was a tremendous accomplishment by itself and even better as two of the girls pulled muscles during the race.
The girls will skip the state championships even though they are the number one seed and give their injuries time to heel. Coach Gliner and Coach Parrish, after speaking with the girls, decided it is not prudent to run hurt and will take off until they are deemed ready to go. Hopefully, the girls will be ready in time for the national championships.
Nevertheless this has been a great run and the team will do what is best for all concerned. This is a long season and Far Rockaway will be there at the end!
