Local Photographer Takes Second Prize

Steve Yaeger, artist, author and photographer has won second prize in black and white photography for his image, Tree Limbs. The photograph was enter-ed, along with two other pictures, in Gateway National Recreation Area’s 2002 Photography Contest. The picture was taken while Yaeger was walking along one of the paths in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. The digital photograph was put into the computer and after studying it Yaeger thought that it might be more striking as a black and white image. When he converted the image to black and white mode, he knew he was right. However, he thought that the two other imag-es that he captured - one a close up of a shelf mushroom and the other a starling roost - were better. When he printed the three photos he was pleased with the outcome, but it was the starling roost and shelf mushroom photos that he selected to submit to the contest. More than one hundred photographs were entered and, as park official Dave Taft explained it, the selections were difficult, as this (2002) contest probably had the most professional photographs ever submitted to date. The winning photos are on display in the Visitor Center.
