Homeland Security Committee At Temple Beth-El
Rabbi Allan Blaine of Temple Beth-El of Rockaway Park has announced the establishment of a "Homeland Security Committee," to be chaired by three Temple activists, Mrs. Esther Rosenthal, a psychotherapist; Mrs. Rhonda Goldberg, an educator; and Mr. Sheldon Schneider, a pharmacist with a broad range of knowledge of medicine and pharmacology.
At the opening meeting representatives from Congressman Anthony Weiner’s office and Steven Ko of the American Red Cross addressed the issues of preparedness, communication, provisions, evacuation, shelter, etc.
The committee is in its earliest stages and is seeking volunteers to be available for assistance in the event of an emergency.
An ongoing coordinated effort at crisis management on the part of the entire community and all faith groups needs to be established as soon as possible. At the present time many in attendance have heard little in regard to Homeland Security from community leaders.
Those in attendance felt that little information has been disseminated to the public and little serious preparation has been made.
The Homeland Security Committee is reaching out to its political leaders, organization and institutions in the community to make a concerted effort to prepare quickly and wisely for all eventualities.
Heightening the consciousness of the community, outreach and coordinated effort are the goals of the Temple’s Homeland Security Committee. It is hoped that the committee will ultimately be absorbed into a major community program.
