Fundraiser Set In Memory Of Gene Whalen By Howard Schwach

Firefighter Eugene Whalen, a longtime Rockaway resident, died on September 11 attempting to help people get out of the World Trade Center.

His brothers and a long-time friend memorialized Whalen with a Rockville Centre Restaurant called "Gene Michael’s"

Now, a foundation has been set up in his name. That foundation, named the "King of Fun Foundation," is holding a fundraiser on Thursday, March 20 at Russo’s on the Bay.

"Many people remember Gene and what he did for his community," says Kieran Mills, one of the organizers of the fundraiser and a firefighter at Ladder 323 in Brooklyn. "We have been friends since we were both probies together and I just don’t want people to forget him."

The affair, which will benefit St. Gertrude’s Church in Edgemere, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the Salvation Army and the Eugene Christmas Tree Foundation, will run from 7 p.m. until midnight.

Those interested in attending the fundraiser or who want further information should call 718-945-3614 or should log onto kingoffunfoundation@hotmail.com.
