It was a bitter cold day with winds so strong it felt as if it was below zero as the Rockaway St. Patty's Day Parade passed by the reviewing stand on Rockaway Beach Blvd. this past Saturday. But, there was the Grand Lady herself, Honorary Grand Marshal, Frances Abbracciamento from Breezy Point, covered in mink from head to foot. She looked snugly warm and fabulous as she stepped out of the car to join the others on the reviewing stand: Dr. Geraldine D. Chapey, member of Board of Regents, N Y State; Dr. Geraldine M. Chapey, chosen Channel (1) 's "Worker of the Week" for overextending herself taking Rockaway seniors out for shows, lunches and shopping and for obtaining the Trinity Bus to transport seniors anywhere they need to go. (Geraldine, you look great on TV). Try to catch her. She has been on N.Y (1) all week.
New York's Mayor Bloomberg marched along, with only an interlined outer jacket yet smiling and happy and he seemed to be enjoying the day, so he said, as he addressed the parade viewers. It was a great day for the Irish in Rockaway and all parade participants ended their march at St. Rosa Lima where they gathered for sustenance, be it beer, soda or coffee to wash down corned beef sandwiches and Irish soda bread. There was music and colorful characters such as Native American Strong Sun ( Alex Dorleac ) in his native dress who performed the Rain dance. He is from the Comanche tribe and marched for Claddagh Inn; Irish Step Dancers, pipers and more for the enjoyment of Grand Marshals, James W. Cahill and Treasa Smyth, all the Marshals, workers and participants. Among them were: Ann Heslin and Mary Kienam very actives community members who are forceful in the VOFT (Voice of the Faithful) fighting for change in the Catholic Church in regard to recent child abuse scandal. The next meeting will be held Mar. 28 at the American Legion Hall in Rockaway at 7pm. Fr. James Sullivan will be guest speaker. There will be plenty of time to hear views from those who attend.
A big Irish party was held at the Catholic Club in Breezy Point for Honorary Marshal, Bernard Cassidy.

Over 200 guests enjoyed the Breezy Point Piper Band, lead by Terrance Williams jr and the children pipers. They had open bar, corned beef sandwiches, salads, music, dancing and accordionist, Jim Pendergast who entertained all.. It was an Irish Ball!
On the authentic St. Pat's Day, March 17, Kennedy's will have two live shows. At 2pm and 6pm ...Jerry Piper Step Dancers and in the evening live Irish Harp.
Supertuscan and other great wines of the Italian Trade commission held two grand tastings at the Marriott Marquis. I was surprised not to see some of my friends from Rockaway who love these events. A beautiful press sit down luncheon gave me a chance to meet some of the vineyard owners and their representatives. At my table was John L Morace of Podere San Luigi,, a robust red wine that was, oh, so smooth and complimented the filet mignon so well. The second wine was from Terrabianca vineyards, just as good but a little drier. Maja Guldener, Jr was the beautiful daughter of the owner and she informed me they have built a 19-room hotel and will be adding on a spa by 2004. Following this five-course lunch the grand tasting took place in the ballroom for all with many varieties of wines from Italy and the finest samplings of food from the best restaurants in New York. It was a great event and do try to attend it next year. Bet the Rockaway seniors would love it.
