Stella Maris Gains Berth To CHSAA Championship

Stella Maris’ Varsity Basketball team advanced to the Championship game with their semifinal win over St. Edmund (64-53). The victory pits SM and Font Bonne Hall against each other this Sunday at 4pm at St. Francis College.

The Lady Flippers scored the first basket of the game and never relinquished the lead. Five players scored in the first led by frosh MaryGrace Brady’s (6 pts) sharp shooting. The Blue and Gold were up 19-12 with one quarter down. Then in the second, back door cuts by Marybeth Raphael, Natalie DeSanctis and Jennifer Anglero with assists from Natalia Anglero saw the lead grow to 9 by half, 31-22.

In the third, only 3 SM players recorded baskets but the team came out strong to start the third and went on a 10- 0 run to go up by 19. Strong rebounding efforts by Juanita Whyms (19 for the game), Jen Anglero, Cynthia Galanos and Nicole Santoro held the Eagles to just one attempt each time down the court. Natalie DeSanctis and Marybeth Raphael (both defensive catalysts) continued to lead by example. Raphael’s efforts resulted in numerous forced turnovers while De Sanctis had 3 half-court "picks" all resulting in baskets (11 quarter pts.). Once again, five Flippers scored in the fourth as the team was led by Jen Anglero (10 quarter pts). Game scorers: Natalie DeSanctis (18), Jen Anglero (16), Natalia Alexander (12), Marybeth Raphael (8), MaryGrace Brady (8) and Juanita Whyms (2).

SM’s Junior varsity squad did not fare as well as they lost 39-35 to St. John’s Prep this past Saturday. The game (as predicted) was exciting and fan-friendly. SM in their full-court man defense and SJP in their 1-2-2 press lent itself to a quick paced game. Once again, Cat Rudden, Erin Casey, Maureen Carey and Jen Greene led the way for SM. Reserves Damaris Rivera, Barbara ("Franny") Krulish and Christina Comis provided invaluable court support. Congratulations to the JV squad and coach Mr. John Raphael on a great season!

Flipper Footnotes: Thanks to so many JV players for making the trip to Bishop Ford. NA: good to have you off the injured list! ND: ruby red does not look good on you, trust me! Mrs. F and Mrs. C we all appreciated your presence!
