Smith Announces Achievers Scholarship Program
State Senator Ada L. Smith has announced that the GreenPoint Foundation is taking applicants for its annual Achievers Scholarship program. The $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to 100 selected high school seniors from the five boroughs of New York, and Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester Counties.
"With the cost of college constantly on the rise, it is more imperative than ever that families gain knowledge about programs aimed at defraying the expenses involved in higher education," Senator Smith said. "Students in my district are among those eligible to receive thousands of dollars toward their education, and I encourage their participation in this wonderful scholarship program."
Specifically, the GreenPoint Foundation, an affiliate of GreenPoint Bank, is especially interested in granting a higher percentage of scholarships to students from low to moderate-income families. Established in 1995, GreenPoint Foundation has awarded 500 scholarships totaling $5 million.
"As of June, 2003 almost 200 students will have had the opportunity to graduate from college, due in part to these scholarships," Senator Smith said. "I certainly hope that some of this year’s scholarship recipients are from my district."
