Elaine P. Gulemas
Elaine P. Gulemas, born in Manhattan, was a Breezy Point resident and died on February 19.
She is survived by her husband John Gulemas, sons Christopher Gulemas and Peter Masterson, and daughter Gina Mason. Gulemas is also survived by her brother Robert, sister Judy, and granddaughter Emily-Rose Masterson.
Gulenas was cremated by the Long Island Cremation Company.
Joseph Patrick Horan
Cedarhurst Deputy Mayor
Joseph Patrick Horan, who was born in Bayonne, NJ, but lived in Cedarhurst for over 50 years, died February 25. He was 82.
Horan, a U.S. Navy Air Corps pilot during WWII, was civically active, and was affiliated with the Catholic War Veterans, the Cub Scouts, and the Village of Cedarhurst.
Married to wife Anita in 1951, Horan was the father of five. He is survived his wife, son Richard, a long-time Rockaway resident and Graybeards secretary, sons Stephen and Christopher, and daughters Linda and Elizabeth. He is survived by his brother John, and sisters Virginia Bonner, Catherine Finnerty and Rita Hennessey. Horan had eight grandchildren.
Horan will be reposed Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Meserole Funeral Home, Inwood. The Christian Burial mass will take place Saturday at St. Joachim Roman Catholic Church, at 9:30 a.m. Internment will be at Holy Rood Roman Catholic Cemetary, in Westbury. The family has asked that memorial gifts be sent to the Interfaith Nutrition Network, in Hempstead: 211 Fulton Street, Hempstead, NY 11550.
Patrick J. McDermott, born in Brookyn and a 25-year Breezy Point resident, died February 26.
McDermott, the proprietor of P.J. McDermott Inc., served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was also a life-long member of the Knights of Columbus Council 293.
He is survived by his wife Mary (nee Cobb), daughters Rosemary McDermott, Cathy Yonki, Alice Hill and son Patrick Jr. He is also survived by sisters Mary Falkowski, Theresa McQuillan, Kathleen Mulhearn, and brothers James and Thomas. Granddaughters Erin and Maggie, Grandsons Andrew and George Yonki and father-in-law of Joan, George, Bill and Tony.
Visiting will be at the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home Friday from 2-5 and 7-10 p.m. The funeral mass will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas More.
Margaret Murphy, a life-long Rockaway resident, died on February 19.
Murphy was predeceased by her husband Patrick. She is survived by her daughters Cathy Alexander, Pattie Cunningham, Carol Murphy, and sons Frank and John Murphy, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation was held at the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home with burial at Long Island National on February 23.
Josephine (nee O'Brien) Raftery, a member of the Rockaway community for nearly 40 years, died February 22.
A beloved homemaker, born in Co. Tipperarry, Clogheen, Ireland, Raftery is predeceased by her husband Patrick and son William. She is survived by sons Brendan, Donald, John, Michael, and Patrick. Raftery had eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Visitation was held at the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home and burial was held at St. Raymond's Cemetery. on February 26.
