George Angle, from Rockaway Point and his friend, Howard Gorlitz had a marvelous time in Panama and said, "It was one of the best vacations they have had. They stayed at the Tower Suites for only $36 per room per day with two continental breakfasts daily and the use of their pool. At Gamboa, the very beautiful resort built on the former U.S.A. military base, they took the tram over the tops of the trees for magnificent views of the ships cruising through the canal and they boarded a ferry to a nearby Island for the day. Let's not forget their visit to the Panama Canal locks where they watched the waters raise and recede as the ships passed through the locks. If you are thinking about visiting that destination, give them a call first. They have an abundance of information. So glad they had fun!

Pink is hot this spring and the mini skirts are back. (Maybe that is a good sign for the stock market?) And, in Fall this year, according to the fashions at the Coterie, you will see soft, fluffy and spongy textures with layered effects in cognac, sunflower yellow, robin's egg blue, olive green, claret, eye popping techno colors and black-covered in rhinestones, and twinkling effects, and ribbons. I just loved the fashions this year. They are sooooo feminine , light and airy with ruffled chiffon tops that are very flattering to the face. Linen sweaters with bell sleeves are also showstoppers. Though the news is gloomy, the clothes are bright and happy and will give a lift to our day. Go out and buy and enjoy. I am sure the merchants in Rockaway have bought some of them for you. Oh, and don't forget the boots, boots, boots (not the kind to schlep in the snow. The good boots run $400 retail though, IF YOU SHOP AROUND you may get them for much, mush less.

While on the fashion subject I mentioned a while back in one of my columns about the unique bags that you can take on a cruise because it is a replica of a ship. Another is a horse's head that you can carry to the race tack and will hold all your winnings. (Ha!). Another is a Santa Clause Head. These are must have for attention getters. They are put out by Timmy Woods (which, unfortunately, was originally printed "Weeds").

The Broadcaster's Foundation's Golden Mike Awards Gala reception and dinner was held last night at the Plaza Hotel. Honoree was Bob Wright, Chairman & CEO of NBC, Vice Chairman and Executive Officer, GE .Tom Brokaw was Emcee Tim Russert, Lily Tartikoff, the Wright family were Presenters.. Conan O'Brien made a special appearance and Gloria Ruben was the special guest artist. The Broadcasters Foundation was founded to help actors out of work, ill and unable to work and any of them who need temporary or long term assistance.

Can't end this column without a few mentions about The Wave's former publisher, Leon Locke, whose anniversary of his death was Feb. 23. Leon was so dedicated to The Wave and devoted to the people of Rockaway. It was his whole life. More and more of us realize, as the time goes by, the true virtues of this man.

While a diligent worker, he believed so in the freedom of expression for all Americans, especially in the Rockaways. He believed in printing every letter, even though he chanced a loss of an advertiser. The freedom of speech from his readers meant more to him. He was a good man, a kind man, a fair man and a non-biased man. We still miss you, Leon and hope you are watching over all your staff at The Wave. We still need your guidance.
