Far Rockaway/ Beach Channel Receive Awards
The New York City Football Coaches Association recently held its 2002 Football Awards Dinner and Ceremony at Stuyvesant High School. The awards were held on Wednesday, January 29, 2003. This annual affair recognizes the achievements of the best athletes in each borough during the past football season. The student athletes that are chosen by the NYC Coaches Association were treated to a warm dinner among family, friends, and coaches, followed by the awards ceremony.
Locally, representing Far Rockaway High School, the recipients were: Seniors WR / DB Marlin Rodriguez, OL / DL Richard Spears, OL / DL Marquis Whitmore, and Sophomore QB Chris Howard. The awards ceremony began with a message from PSAL Coordinator Paul Barchitta followed by a message from PSAL Football Commissioner Allan Arbuse. He stressed the importance of being successful in the classroom as well as on the field of play. The guest speaker of the evening was Doug Marine, who is currently the Offensive Line Coach of the New York Jets. Marone, who is a graduate of Hebert H. Lehman High School in the Bronx, recognized the influence of his former coach Carmine Colosanto, Lehman’s current Head Coach. He always stressed the importance of hard work and dedication in whatever you chose to do in life.
Port Richmond Head Coach Steve Peretzman made the presentation of the Coach of the Year Award. The award was given to Curtis High School Head Coach Fred Oliveri. Coach Oliveri guided his Curtis Warriors to the PSAL City Championship this past football season, defeating Fort Hamilton in the finals. Stuyvesant Head Coach David Velkis made the presentation of the All Academic Team Awards. Among the recipients for the awards was Beach Channel OL / LB Robert Deutchman, who maintained an 88.33 Grade Point Average, and achieved a score of 1140 on his SAT exams. The presentation of the All Borough Awards followed, and they were presented by each Borough representative. The evening ended with the introduction of the All City Football Team. These individuals will compete in July in the annual Boomer Bowl (sponsored by Boomer Esaison), which showcases the all stars from N.Y..C. vs. Long Island.
