Friends of Rockaway Little League At It Again

By Tom Boggiano

It’s that time of year again. Pitchers and catchers have reported. There’s less than 2 months till opening day and Rockaway’s teenage umpires are sending their blue shirts to the cleaners getting ready for a new season. Under the tutelage of Jim Roberts, the Rockaway Little League has put together a formidable group of youngsters that have turned the Little League competitions into well officiated, organized games that all family members enjoy attending. Names like Scooby Knott, Ryan Roberts, Mike Paskoff, Brian Elfont, Tom Greene, Richie George, Sue Hurley, Shane Gauvard, Scott Blutstein, Danny O’Toole, TJ Pulkoski, Kevin Judge, Timmy Raphael, Ray McGrisken and others have been the foundation of the umpiring crew for the past two years. The call is going out to them as well as to all the supporters that have made it happen.

For the past two years the Friends of the Rockaway Little League, a group of Little League parents, coaches and officials, have sponsored a pre season fundraiser to support significant projects to better the Little League experience for all. The most significant recipient of the fundraising money has been the umpiring program. Other projects to be completed are the installation of scoreboards and dugouts.

This year with the help of outstanding contributions by the Knights of Columbus and a list of people too long to put in print we will be holding our fundraiser (A Night at the Races) on Saturday, April 26th at the Knights of Columbus. And the races are only a prelude to the dancing that takes place afterwards. A good time is always had by all. Our call to the community is to support the young adults who do the umpiring work and the children who benefit from their leadership. So come out for a night of fun. Look for our advertisements throughout the community and lend support.
