A Realistic Alternatiive
I am writing this article out of concern for the young people in our community. Far Rockaway, New York has become a focal point of intensive Urban Renewal. I am happy that the government is making plans for the Revitalization of this community, I sincerely hope that the government include in this budget for Urban Renewal, an Educational and Recreational facility that will give our young people realistic alternatives to violence, drug, alcohol abuse and gangsterism. I believe that the government can do more to prevent crime in our community. I observe that houses are going up on every vacant lot. They cut educational dollars, they cut the dollars for social services. They have none to build vocational and recreational facilities but they are building more prisons. Young people like to be "hooked up" instead they easily get "cuffed up" and "locked up."
Young people need resources, motivation empowerment, wholesome, creative and productive involvement, in order to maximize their educational, social and spiritual potential.
I firmly believe that organizations like R.D.R.C., R.I.M.C., M.A.G., M.A.D., P.R.Y.S.E., and other civic groups, in conjunction with our elected community representatives can mobilize their resources and provide our young people with realistic alternatives to violence. This would bring about a significant reduction in crime.
