Stella Maris JV And Varsity Defeat St. Edmund

Stella Maris JV And Varsity Defeat St. Edmund

This past Tuesday both Stella Maris basketball teams hosted league competitor St. Edmund. SM’s Junior Varsity squad defeated the visiting Eagles to improve their league standing to 10-7. The team led by the play of Erin Casey, Catherine Rudden, Kelley McKinley, Jennifer Greene and Maureen Carey took an early lead and never looked back. Quality minutes were also contributed by Barbara Krulish, Alyce Miraglia, Hope Johnson and Caroline Weeks.

Then in the later game SM’s Varsity team also defeated their St. Edmund opponent. SM was led by the defensive efforts of Marybeth Raphael, Natalie DeSanctis and Juanita Whyms. The team, playing its first game with leading-scorer Natalia Alexander (18.2 ppg.) sidelined due to an ankle injury, quickly overcame that huge scoring vacuum as 7 team members contributed offensively. Clutch outside shooting and strong inside play by MaryGrace Brady and Jennifer Anglero helped the Blue and Gold to a 22 point lead at various times. The league victory places the Lady Flippers in second place with a 12-2 record in league competition. Playoffs for both squads commence after the midwinter recess.

The story behind the story on this night was the tribute paid to the graduating Cheerleaders Megan Hickey, Jackie Rodriguez, Michelle Ammirati, Candace Wilson and Team Manager Sue Brennan. Junior Varsity, Varsity and Cheerleaders took turns thanking the Seniors for their hard work and dedication to SM basketball throughout their high school careers. The ladies also received tokens of the teams’ gratitude. The entire Stella Maris community wishes these five extraordinary ladies success and happiness in all their future endeavors.

Flipper Footnotes: NA chin up! It will be OK. Ladies, well done on earning the bench back. You worked hard all game. MR you owe me one for the TO called in the 4th. ND: no, you did not look like anyone else when you performed your pirouette. MB: nice decision to make that shot! JA: you are killing me softly but I am enjoying the ride.
