SJEH Blood Drive Set For February 24

SJEH Blood Drive Set For February 24

St. John's Episcopal Hospital South Shore will sponsor its semi-annual blood drive on Monday, February 24, 2003, from 10 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. The drive will be held in the first floor Board Room at St. John's, which is located at 327 Beach 19th Street, Far Rockaway, NY  11691.

"We urge everyone to come in and give blood," said John Boyle, PhD, Director of Laboratory Services at St. John's who is spearheading the blood drive. "The New York blood supply remains critically low as donations traditionally take a downturn during the winter flu and cold season."

According to James Louis, Executive Director of Long Island Blood Services, Long Island does not collect enough blood to meet its own needs, importing 25 percent of its supply from other parts of the country. Yet, the entire New York region faces additional challenges as the long-standing importation of blood from Europe, known as Euroblood, ended late last year. The new Food and Drug Administration guidelines that ban donations from Europe due to a risk of spreading mad cow disease via transfusion has eliminated 25 percent of the metropolitan area's blood supply. The greater New York community also is still experiencing both human and emotional turmoil related to 9/11 that have resulted in work relocations, layoffs, and dramatically reduced donations throughout the New York community.

"We know all these factors contribute to the current crisis in blood supply. We urge everyone eligible to come forward and donate," said Dr. Boyle.

Blood donors must be at least age 17, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good general health. For more information about donating blood and the St. John's blood drive, please call 718-869-7325.
