Administrative Changes Made At BCHS
By Howard Schwach
John Marcus, who has been the Assistant Principal, English at Beach Channel High School, has been named by Queens High School Superintendent John Lee as the new Interim Principal for the school.
Marcus, who has been at the school since 1998, will replace Andrea Holt, who was the interim principal from September until this week.
Marcus will act as principal until the school’s C-30 Committee, a group of teachers, administrators and parents, decides on a finalist to be appointed permanently to the position.
That committee has been meeting for a number of months, and is expected to make a decision in the near future.
The new education plan recently announced by the Mayor and the School Chancellor, however, do away with the Queens High School division and moves both Far Rockaway High School and Beach Channel High School into the newly-formed Division Five, under Dr. Kathleen Cashin.
Holt had become a controversial leader and had lost favor with much of the school community due to what was perceived as a lack of discipline in the school and her involvement in moving many young students from the school for "not progressing towards graduation."
A student petition delivered to The Wave two weeks ago and telephone calls to the paper from parents indicated that Assistant Principal Claude Monreau was the favorite for the top job. It is believed that Monreau is still a candidate under the C-30 process, however.
Erin Duffy will take over the position as Coordinator of the English Department.
Robert Brevetti will move from Martin Van Buren High School to Beach Channel High School as its new Assistant Principal, Organization.
Robert Comer, who was Assistant Principal, Security under former principal Bernard Gassaway, will return to the school in that capacity.
