St. Francis Closes CYO Season As Champions

The CYO Boys Swimming season came to a close last Saturday and the team from St. Francis de Sales took the title. The championship win in a league of 11 other teams was the culmination of an undefeated season. The 2002 / 2003 campaign was extra sweet since the team, comprised of basically the same boys, finished in seventh place last year. But what a difference a year makes. When you apply focus and dedication along with a good helping of fun and competition then the defeats of the past melt away.

From the first dual meet back in early November to the final dual meet and the championship, the swimmers gained confidence and came together as a true team. Make no mistake the "Team" concept really made this group special. When you have age groups that span from 6 to 14 years old, it is a very different experience than most teams. Seeing the older divisions (Juniors and Seniors), help the younger groups (Novice and Bantams) was what made this team special and was the core of its strength.

To single out any one individual would not do justice to all the great performances. However a special acknowledgement should go out to the group of boys who ended careers that in some cases spanned 9 years. A great Irish soccer player said, "The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It's nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It's about doing things in style, with a flourish".

The group going on to new challenges are: Ryan Atwood, T.J. Carroll, Vincent Geary, Nicholas Hansen, Danny Lynch, P.J. Mullen, Nick Prakope, Kevin Quinn, Andrew Spardaro, Joe Tyne and Kevin Windels. Best of luck to these fine young men!
