Walter A. Browne, Jr.
Army Sergeant

Walter A. Browne, Jr., born in Manhattan, was a long time resident of the Rockaways who passed away on January 21, 2003.

Walter worked as a Medical Lab Director and was a Sergeant in the United States Army. He was a member of the Roy Wilkins Park Association, Queens Clinical Society, 369 Veterans Association, and the Brownsville Boys Club.

He is survived by his wife, Rita; daughters, Chrystal, Angela (Aziza) and Cynthia; sisters, Ima and Una; seven grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends.

Funeral arrangements were handled under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inc.

Herbert Claude Carnegie
Tailor

Herbert Claude Carnegie, born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, West Indies, was a long time resident of Far Rockaway. He died on January 16, 2003.

Herbert worked as a tailor throughout his life and was a member of the Mount Salus Gospel Hall (Bethany Gospel Chapel).

He is preceded in death by his wife, Julia.

He is survived by his 12 children; over 50 grandchildren; and a host of other family members.

Interment under the direction of the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inc. was held in St. Andrew, Jamaica, West Indies.

Edith Cecelia Cody
Homemaker

Edith Cecelia Cody, born in the Bronx, was a resident of Rockaway Beach for 20 years. She died on January 24, 2003 at the age of 98.

Edith spent the majority of her life as a homemaker.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Lemquist and Marion Durant; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Interment under the direction of the Meserole Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Holy Rood Roman Catholic Cemetery in Westbury, New York.

Kim End
BCHS Graduate - Class of '87

Kim (nee Lee) End, who resided in Delmar, New York, coming from Far Rockaway, passed away on January 22, 2003.

Kim was a graduate of Beach Channel High School and St. Joachim's School in Cedarhurst (1983).

She is preceded in death by her daughter, Stephanie.

She is survived by her husband (of 13 years) Bob; daughters, Melanie and Penny; parents, George and Nancy Lee; sisters, Joy Lee Gordon and Elizabeth Lee; and grandfather, Bert Metzger.

Funeral arrangements were handled under the direction of the Meyers Funeral Home.

Louise J. Festa
Dearly Missed

Louise J. Festa, born in Astoria, New York, was a 49-year resident of Rockaway Park. She passed away on January 24, 2003.

Louise worshipped at St. Francis de Sales Church and spent her life as a homemaker. She was a member of the Mother's Guild and served as a Stella Maris Girl Scout Leader.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Vincent F. Festa.

She is survived by her daughters, Annette; Gould and Louise M. Steigerwald; brothers, Arthur and Edward Aloise; sister, Connie Dabrowski; and grandchildren, Captain Mark Diss (United States Marine Corp) and Matthew Diss.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc, was held at St. Johns Cemetery.

Loretta B. Hickey
Belle Harbor Resident

Loretta B. Hickey, born in Brooklyn, New York, was a 30-year resident of the Belle Harbor community. She died on January 21, 2003.

Loretta worshipped at St. Camillus Church and was well know in her community.

She is preceded in death by her father, Francis X. Hickey, and mother, Frances C. Hickey.

She is survived by her sons, Michael C. Campbell, and Richard and William Cowley; sisters, Diane Garrison, Ann Hastings, Kellie-Ann and Patricia Hickey, Michele Killoran, Catherine Maher, and Mary Spolin; brothers, Frank and Steven Hickey; and grandchildren, Michael and Alexandra Campbell.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, February 8, 10 a.m., at St. Camillus Church.

Charlie Hunter
Construction Worker

Charlie Hunter, born in Taliaferro County, Georgia, was a resident of the Far Rockaway community for 40 years. He passed away on January 21, 2003.

Charlie was employed as a construction worker (concrete) and was a member of the St. John's Baptist Church in Rockaway Beach.

He is survived by several children, brothers, sisters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc. was held at Mount Olive Baptist Church.

Charlotte M. Lynch
Rockaway Beach Resident

Charlotte M. Lynch, a long time resident of Rockaway Beach, died on January 25, 2003.

During her life, Charlotte spent much of her time caring for her family and other loved ones.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Bernard T. Lynch; and daughter, Janet Perri.

She is survived by her son, Thomas J. Lynch; brother, Alvin Hartje; and granddaughter, Tara

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc. was held at Calverton National Cemetery.

Virginia Madden
50-Year Resident

Virginia Madden, a resident of Belle Harbor for fifty years, died on January 20, 2003.

Madden, who was a long-time parishioner at St. Frances de Sales Church, was a member of the Seabreeze Senior Club, the Golden Age Club at St. Camillus and the St. Rose of Lima Senior Club.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William; and daughter, Rosanne Madden.

She is survived by her son, William; daughter, Virginia Madden; daughter-in-law, Jean; and grandchildren, Colleen Madden, Jennifer and Bill Mincher, William Madden and Kristine Madden.

Interment was held at St. Charles Cemetery under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc.

Baby Najah Azalea Martin
Loved By Many

Baby Najah Azalea Martin, born in Queens, was a long time Rockaway resident who died on January 15, 2003.

She is survived by her mother, Glenda Lopez; father, Wayne Douglas Martin II; sisters, Najai and Tamiya; grandparents; and a host of other family members.

Interment under the direction of the Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Springfield Cemetery.

Selma Razack
Secretary

Selma Razack, born in Wakenaam, Guyana, passed away on January 20, 2003.

Selma spent many years working as a secretary.

She is survived by her children, Colin, Mike, Cyril, Curtis, Winnie, Claudia, Claudette, and Claudine; and a host of other family members.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Amityville Cemetery.

Min Sheldon
Formerly of Belle Harbor

Min Sheldon, a resident of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, coming from Belle Harbor (where she lived for 54 years), passed away on January 29, 2003. She was 87.

Min is preceded in death by her husband, Sy, a longtime community leader in Rockaway.

She is survived by her children, Stacey, Henry, and Randy; grandchildren; Gabriel, Jenifer, Nicole, Aylson, Lee and Joy.

The funeral was held at Menorah Gardens in Davie, Florida.

Jennie Lee Weaver
Homemaker

Jennie Lee Weaver, born in Edgefield, South Carolina, was a 50-year resident of the Rockaway community who died on January 22, 2003.

Jennie Lee spent the majority of her life as a homemaker and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Far Rockaway.

She is survived by her parents, Reverend Pierce and Emma Weaver; sisters, Helen, Lillie and Rosea; brothers, Lawrence, James, Caleb and Westley; niece, Victoria Weaver Mackey; and a host of other family members.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Pinelawn Cemetery.

Stanley Hezekiah Wiltshire
Carpenter

Stanley Hezekiah Wiltshire, born in St. Andrew, Jamaica, West Indies, passed away on January 7, 2003.

Stanley worked as a carpenter and was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in St. Albans.

He is survived by his wife, Louise; son, Dr. Michael Wiltshire; daughters, Myrtle Bryan, Carmen Brown, Frederica Wiltshire, Barbara Ward, Hanibel McDonald and Janice Daley; adopted son, Michael McDonald; 23 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and other family members.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Pinelawn Cemetery.
