P.S. 197 Honors Dr. King’s Birthday

P.S. 197 Honors Dr. King’s Birthday

P.S. 197 students celebrated the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in many different ways. The January bulletin board theme is the Fight for Freedom. Students were engaged in lessons and conversations about people who have influenced the fight for freedom.

The highlight of the week was the Oratory Contest held on January 17. This special event was the second Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratory Contest under the direction of Holly Gold, P.D.A.

Ms. Gold brought the contest to P.S. 197 last year and has continued to keep the spirit of Dr. King alive in his famous speech, "I Have A Dream." Students in grades K-5 had the opportunity to compete in the competition by memorizing portions of Dr. King’s speech and reciting it at the special assembly. A distinguished panel judged the presentations. Students received trophies, medals and certificates for their participation.

Mrs. Linda M. Smith, Principal congratulated the MLK Award winners and their teachers and presented the awards. Mrs. Smith thanked the teachers and parents and students for reinforcing the P.S. 197 philosophy that Ocean School Students are successful learners everyday.

Winners were kindergartners Joshua Buffa and Travon Carvin; first graders Alexandra Vasquez and Brittany Cottle; second graders Kevin Cifuentes and Alejandra Castellon; third graders Jasmine Flores, Satoshi Flores and Lejaney Blue; fourth graders Jonathan Ferguson, Jahnya Barnett and Zacheriah Reed; fifth graders Deidre Morrissey, Tomi Jaiyesimi and Babjide Ajasafe.

The Ocean School is thankful to Holly Gold for her devotion to the Ocean School teachers, parents and students.
