New NAACP Chapter Officers Sworn In
By Gary G. Toms
On Thursday, January 16, the Far Rockaway Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) held a swearing-in ceremony for several newly elected officers. The event was held at the St. John Baptist Church on Beach 74 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
Assemblywoman Michele Titus was on hand to administer the oath to the new officers, which was attended by a number of local NAACP members. After the ceremony, chapter President Ed Williams talked about a series of issues the organization will focus on in 2003.
"In addition to increasing the membership of this chapter, we will be placing emphasis on the need for affordable housing, jobs, and major improvements in education in the Rockaways," said Williams.
"The days of sitting back and just allowing things to happen in our community are over. Things are happening in this community that will have a profound impact on the poor and elderly. It's time to stand up, make some noise, and get people involved."
