Local 9/11 Hero Honored

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employee Kenneth Concepcion has been recently honored by Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta for his role in helping evacuate 70,000 people from Pier 11 in lower Manhattan on September 11.

Mineta noted that Concepcion was "calm in the face of panic, organized in the midst of chaos, and uncommonly brave."

As chief of Maritime Safety for TSA, Concepcion received the 2002 Service to America "Heroes of September 11" medal at a November 13, 2002 Washington, D.C. ceremony.

Concepcion grew up in Rockaway, served ten years in the U.S. Navy and five years in the U.S. Coast Guard. Concepcion played on the Rugby team, known then as "Mr. Five."
