Stella Maris Lady Flippers Bolt to Victory

Stella Maris Lady Flippers Bolt to Victory

Stella Maris’ Varsity and Junior Varsity basketball teams traveled to St. John’s Prep and both won in very close games. The victories leave both squads with 5-1 league records.

The Junior Lady Flippers and the Red Storm were tied at half 14-14. Catherine Rudden and Erin Casey each chipped in 6 points while Damaris Rivera, Hope Johnson and Kelley McKinley provided invaluable, tough rebounding efforts. With Erin Casey on the bench (foul trouble) Maureen Carey and Caroline Weeks ably filled the void as the Flippers outscored the Storm 9-6 in the third.

SJP scored the first 4 points of the quarter to take the lead. From there, the score seesawed back and forth. Clutch outside shooting by Erin Casey, Catherine Rudden and Jennifer Greene held the Storm at bay. The team had to withstand an end-of-the-game possession, by the Storm, to seal the victory. Game highs for the Lady Flippers were: Catherine Rudden and Erin Casey (12 pts.) and Jennifer Greene (6 pts.). The final score was 35-34.

Not to be outdone in the "Kardiac Kids" category the Senior Blue and Gold won a heart-stopper 42-40. It was apparent from the get go that SM would have a tough time scoring. Just 2 for 10 in the first quarter (Marygrace Brady’s trey and jumper) left the team trailing 13-5. The lid remained on the rim as in the second stanza the Flippers shot a mere 4 for 16.

Another three pointer by Marygrace Brady plus baskets by Natalia Alexander and Jennifer Anglero left the Lady Flippers within striking distance at 19-14 by half. In the third, SM was again outscored 12-8 and entered the fourth down by 9.

And then all the patience and perseverance began to pay off. The skies opened and the lid was mysteriously gone. The Blue and Gold inched back and finally took the lead on the heels of 2 more treys (Natalie DeSanctis and Natalia Alexander). Several well-placed defensive stops, led by Marybeth Raphael and Juanita Whyms, placed the momentum on the Flippers side. In the fourth, SM outscored the Storm 20-9. SM was led by Natalia Alexander’s 18 and Jennifer Anglero’s 11.

Flipper Footnotes: Both teams host Bishop Ford on Friday January 10th. JV tip off is 4:00 followed by V at 5:30. The addition of team maid, Hazel, seems to have been just the right missing ingredient! Nd, you can breath now, MR’s penance is done. New team candy is now Menthos; they work great. Hint to the JV: the ONLY benefit to having water coolers is when they actually make it onto the bus!! Well done, ladies!!!
