Rebuttal To "The Opinion"

Rebuttal To "The Opinion"

Dear Editor;

Two weeks ago a letter that I wrote to "Letters to the Editor" dated July 25, 2002 was finally published in The Wave. In it I discussed the rezoning of PS114 to the East-side of Beach 117th Street. On that same date December 28, 2002, a Rockaway Park Association's letter was also published in which they too, strongly recommended down zoning to Beach 117th Street. In last week's Wave in a column entitled "The Opinion" Howard Schwach stated that I was at odds with the Rockaway Park Association's concept of re-zonement.  How wrong can you be Mr. Schwach, when both the RPA and I clearly advocate down zoning.  The RPA stance was printed as follows "Since being established in 1996, the RPA has advocated for the down zoning of P.S. 114 from its present line to Beach 117th Street.  This makes sense and should be reviewed and considered by our School Board".

My stance on behalf of the Rockaway Park Homeowners & Residents was "new zoning include Breezy Point to the East-side of Beach 117th Street including the two addresses across from the Seaside Library...the natural borderline. . .the Rockaway Park community will be able to send all of its children to one school".  Furthermore, up zoning (or Plan 4) was not addressed in my letter because such a consideration did not exist in July.  I would hope you apologize for printing the Association's are at odds when both are definitely on the same thought when it comes to zoning and neighborhood schools.

Mr. Schwach there are probably a few questions you need to answer, Why has it taken you so long to write anything about the down zoning issue?  Why are upcoming meetings buried or not found in our only community newspaper?  We are all entitled to make mistakes Mr. Schwach.  Let us hope in the New Year The Wave will begin to follow our children and our neighborhood schools.  Rockaway issues are plentiful, Mr. Schwach, why don't you attend each Association's general meetings and join a committee or two that would be of interest.

The final School Board meeting regarding Rockaway Zoning before a February vote will be at MS180, Monday, January 13, 2003 at 7:00PM.  Anyone wishing to e-mail the school board may do so at comschbd27@aol.com or Community Superintendent Bromme at mbromme@nycboe.net.
