Weiner Is Now Whip

Weiner Is Now Whip

Congressman Anthony Weiner, who represents the west end of the Rockaway peninsula, will assume the position of Regional Whip when Congress reconvenes today, giving him a key role in the legislative work of New York's Congressional Delegation.  Weiner was elected to the post by the unanimous vote of his Democratic colleagues from New York.

Starting in January, Rep. Weiner will become one of just 24 Regional Whips for the Democrats in the House, with responsibility for the New York delegation.  In his new role, Weiner will help manage the parties legislative agenda on the House floor, and will coordinate the efforts of his fellow New York Members in conjunction with New York's other Regional Whip, Rep. Maurice Hinchey.

"The 108th Congress promises to be an especially challenging one," said Rep. Weiner, "with the House sharply divided along party and ideological lines, and weighty matters to consider both abroad and on the home front.   I am honored by the faith my colleagues have demonstrated in me during this important time."
