Candidates Prepare To Do Battle The race for the Assembly seat in the 31st District is beginning to heat up, with several candidates filing petitions to be on the ballot in the September Primary. The candidates vying for the seat, which is currently held by Michele Titus, are from the same field that opposed Titus in a special election that was held back on April 16 of this year. A special election was called for after the sudden death of Assemblywoman Pauline Rhodd-Cummings, who succumbed to cancer in late January. In the final tally, election returns showed that Titus soundly defeated her opponents, Marina Rejas, a Republican, and Michael Duvalle, who ran on the Independence (Conservative) line, by close to a four to one margin. The unofficial breakdown was Marina Rejas (78 votes), Michele Titus (825 votes) and Michael Duvalle (254 votes). Those challenging Titus in the upcoming Primary are: Charles A. Pringle, Jr. (Democratic line), Bryan J. Block (Democrat-Conservative line), Henrietta Fullard (Democratic line), Michael Duvalle (Democratic-Independence line), Taj Rajkumar (Democratic line) and Marina Rejas (Republican line). Petitions have also been filed in other districts as well. In the 23rd Assembly District, no primary is scheduled in the race to unseat Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer. That contest, which has been determined to be between Pheffer (Democratic, Liberal and Workers Party line) and Kenneth Huhn (Independent), will be held in November. State Senator Malcolm A. Smith (Democratic, Republican, Conservative and Working Families Party line), representing the 14th District, is unopposed in the race for State Senator. Smith has received the endorsement of the Republican Party. In the 6th Congressional District, Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (Democratic, Liberal and Working Families Party line) is facing a challenge from Rockaway community activist Rey Clarke (Democratic, Independence line). Congressman Anthony Weiner (Democratic and Working Families Party line) is being challenged by Alfred F. Donohue (Republican, Conservative line) in the 9th Congressional District election. The general elections will be held on November 5. Many calls have been placed to The Wave by readers who inquired about the residency of the latest field of candidates and those who currently represent districts.
