The Christ the King Royals certainly capitalized on the old saying, "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade." They took a 1-6 regular season record and flipped the script by power housing their way through the Catholic High School Football League AA Play-offs to win the championship 34-8 over Iona Prep.

All season long, the heavily Junior laden Varsity team struggled with closely contested losses and the press sited inexperience as a major contributing factor., almost overnight, they became the team to watch, with their upset of the #1 seeded St. Francis Prep, 19-13.

Rockaway was well represented on the Christ The King squad. Coach Howie Merkerson was CTK’s offensive coordinator. Defensive corner David Lewis and defensive ends, Jarrett Payne and Michael Lombardi were all juniors. Varsity coach Mike Cassidy and the rest of his coaching staff should be commended for maintaining morale and focus during this seasaw season.

With so many returning players, the Royals should be a highly rated team next season. The team will have to replace senior captain Justin Capace, who was the defensive MVP of the Senior Bowl and had an interception and a sack.

The junior varsity currently has residents from the Rockaways that will join the varsity team next year. Christ the King could become the "Rockaway’s team" of the CHSFL.
