No Faith In Church Story

No Faith In Church Story

Dear Editor;

I am concerned about how you view Rockaway. You put a short and informative article in your paper on Dec. 20th. It was regarding a legal suit concerning the handling of priests that were accused of abuse.

While, I do not deny you have the right to report such a story, I do deplore your choice of picture to accompany your article. Why would you put a picture of a neighborhood church that, in at least the last 10 years, has committed itself to building up the community in Rockaway? I do believe that you should report these horrible acts so that they do not happen again. But, please leave the innocent people (parishioners and priests alike) out of your attacks on the Diocese of Brooklyn. What gain is there to portray the local churches in a negative way? Why not contribute to the light of the neighborhood instead of plunging good institutions into darkness. All you are doing is creating uneasy feelings among the people of Rockaway. I think you need to assess your opinions of the your neighbors in Rockaway and decide if your actions are helping to build our neighborhood or tear it down.

Why not do a story on the good that some of these churches do? Are you afraid that you might find them a positive influence on the neighborhood? Would that ruin your circulation? Do you believe that positive stories would sell less papers? Maybe YOU should have a little faith and try it. The people of Rockaway may surprise you.
