Power Outage Hits 9,000 Homes
By Howard Schwach
More than 9,000 Rockaway homes, from Bayswater to Breezy Point, were without electricity for four hours on Christmas night, as a winter storm swept through the area.
Long Island Power Authority spokesperson Michael Lowndes told The Wave that a problem at the Beach 108 substation failed at approximately 6:15 p.m., just as many families were gathering for the traditional Christmas meal.
Lowndes said that the raging storm with winds of up to 50 miles per hour kept workers from immediately addressing the outage, but work crews got to the site about 8:30. Lights were back on throughout the peninsula by 10 p.m, although there were some reports that a number of local residents did not get their lights back until the early morning hours of December 26.
