All the presents have been unwrapped, all the toys have brought their joys and we are now ready to face the 2003. New Year’s noise. Will a new babe brighten your year or a dear one’s death bring on a tear? It is the unknown we fear. War or peace? Will these conflicts ever cease? Living under a cloud in these turbulent days our nation shifts from phase to phase. If it is war make it quick with few deaths and few sick. This life of terror is no way to live. Dear God bring back kindness and love and hearts that forgive. Our hurts make wounds that are hard to heal and when they fester impossible to conceal. But we must be brave and trudge our way and try to grab a bit of happiness along the way. And, I must say, "A party or two is good for you." HAPPY, HEALTHY, PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

Speaking of parties, Christmas shopping days put a damper on the New York Galas. This was good theatre time when seats are available……..Hollywood Arms, the new Carol Burnett Show she wrote with daughter, Carrie Hamilton, since deceased before the play opened on Broadway, portrays Carol’s younger life. The reviews stirred my curiosity. Multi award winner, Linda Lavin portrayed Nanny (Carol’s grandma who raised her) with perfection. Michele Fawk took on the role of Louise, Carol’s alcoholic mother, in a realistic manner. The children, Sara Nimietz, (young Helen) and Nicolas King (11) as landlord, Dixie’s son , did a fine job. The whole cast did a superb job. My criticism of the play was that it was too gloomy and the first act dragged a bit, especially in between scenes. It lacked levity, music and funny skits that marked Carol’s career. Though not written as a musical or comedy, however, it sure needed comedic relief. It did tug at your heartstrings and there were times it opened the tear ducks in your eyes to cause droplets on your face. This may be your cup of tea. As for me, I prefer a happier, spirited play where I feel uplifted when I leave the theatre. That was the feeling I got when I saw Porterphilia (unpublished songs by Cole Porter that were never heard by many. Oh, but they were performed beautifully by three very talented singers/dancers/actors. I left the theatre in a euphoric state and felt good for the rest of the evening. This memoir to Cole Porter can be seen at the St. Peter’s Church adjacent to the Citi Corp building at Lexington and 52 St. in Manhattan.

At the Maverick Theatre "A Late Supper", new play by Kahl Floren is a show about family relationships. You can’t help but to relate to this one………Two sisters who have been on the outs for a few years have a reunion. The great expectations of the older sister is shattered because of the anger and frustration still festering in the younger sister’s heart over her sister’s husband. Beautifully acted. Katherine Leask (Diane) aroused the emotions in me especially when confronted for the first time with the former relationship between her husband and her sister. You could see and feel the shock and hurt she felt so much you wanted to cry for her. Another live play I would highly recommend. The Maverick Theatre is on West 26 Sreet and 8 Ave.

Just got word that Harold Brady (honest golfer, Harold, as they called him) and jazz buff of the Rockaways, passed away during the week. We all loved Harold and can’t believe he is now gone, leaving behind two girls, Jane and Mary, both very successful, as well as three sons who have all done as well. Hope you are resting at peace, Harold and certainly there is no reason why not.. He was a good man who led a good life and a fine father who raised beautiful children. You’ll be missed, Harold.

Peter Tennyson is in Peninsula General Hospital Rehabilitation Unit and doing nicely. ……12 year old Eddy Mills recuperating unbelievably after a devastating illness. The family thanks you for your prayers and requests continued prayers.
