Far Rockaway HS Hosts Successful Quad Match
By Ken Hernandez
The PSAL opened its doors to allow Far Rockaway High School to host a four-team match yesterday for the first time in decades. The day was quite successful for all parties involved.
The other participating schools were Herbert H. Lehman, Alfred E. Smith (both from the Bronx), and South Shore High School (from Brooklyn). All teams arrived on time, and head referee Bob Antonitto did an excellent job of officiating. All schools showed good sportsmanship, and quality wrestling throughout the afternoon.
Lehman appears to be the big winner of the day, with victories over Far Rockaway (57 – 15) and Smith. South Shore earned a victory over Smith in the second dual meet of the day. Far Rockaway, after taking the loss to Lehman rebounded to earn a quality win over South Shore (48 – 5). A lapse in judgment on the part of one South Shore wrestler cost the team 1 point for unsportsmanlike conduct. Otherwise the matches were hard fought and well coached. The wrestlers from Smith battled through both of their matches (vs. Lehman and South Shore). Like many of the small school in the city, small squads often struggle in the dual meets.
This is just something we as teams and coaches must work through as we try to build up the sport of wrestling in our individual schools as well as throughout the city. The idea of tri and quad meets is a good one, and the PSAL should continue this idea. Saturday matches are also a good idea as we can prevent our athletes from arriving home late during weekday matches. Thanks to the PSAL for the opportunity.
