On Saturday, December 14, the Deerfield Area Association held its annual Christmas Dinner Dance and Fundraiser at the Imperial Ballroom, located at 259 Doughty Boulevard in Inwood. Many community representatives were on hand to show their support, as three members of the community were honored for years of dedicated service to the Rockaway area.

Curtis Archer (Executive Director of the Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation- RDRC), Anthony Williamson (Treasurer and Financial Secretary for the Deerfield Area Association) and Gary "The G-man" Toms (Associate Editor of The Wave) were all acknowledged as outstanding leaders for their work in the community and with children.

City Councilman James Sanders, Jr. presented awards to each of the honorees. Barbara Smith, President of the organization, became very emotional as she reflected on the accomplishments of her close friend, the late Assemblywoman Pauline Rhodd-Cummings. Cummings was a major supporter and former President of the organization. During the course of the evening several moments of silence were observed in her honor.

Democratic District Leader Bob Simmons and wife Patsy, Jeremiah C. Gaffney (of Gaffney's Funeral Home, Inc.), Jay Velasquez (owner of Almost Paradise), and Linda Plummer (the broker/owner of RE/MAX Peninsula Properties) were just a few of the community and business leaders that attended the gala.
