Stella Maris Varsity Wins/JV Falls In Heartbreaker

League victories over St. Saviour and St. John’s Prep raised Stella Maris’ Varsity basketball team’s record to 4-0 (3-0 in league play). At St. Saviour SM was paced by Jen Anglero (18 pts.), Natalia Alexander (15 pts.) and Natalie DeSanctis (8 pts.). Up 21-17 at the half, the Blue and Gold utilized a 21-4 third quarter surge to seal the road victory. The final score was 55-34.

St. John’s, at home, was a different scenario. Down at half by a score of 26-25, the Lady Flippers used to the intermission to review the game plan. However, the quick review took some time to sink in. SM did outscore SJP 13-10 in the third to take a 2-point lead into the final stanza. However, they unveiled what has now become known as the "Stella Surge" in the fourth quarter: by outscoring SJP 19-4. SM was lead by Natalia Alexander (22 pts.), Jen Anglero (16 pts.), Marybeth Raphael (7 pts., 7 assists) and Natalie DeSanctis (7 pts., 7 assists).

SM’s Junior Varsity squad went 2-1 over the same time period. Road wins over St. Saviour (47-39) and Bishop Ford (50-32) both held the same M.O. Close at half, the Lady Flippers would almost double their opponent’s score in the second half.

In the SS game, SM was led by Jennifer Greene (12 pts.) and Erin Casey had a monster game with 22 points. The Ford game saw 7 Flippers score: Maureen Carey (12 pts.), Erin Casey (11 pts.), Hope Johnson (9 pts.)and Jen Greene (6 pts.) were the scoring leaders.

SM’s first League loss was a heartbreaker to SJP by a score of 28-23. As the score indicates, SM could literally not buy a basket. Relentless defense kept it close but in the end that much needed basket kept evading the Home White. Erin Casey led the Flippers in scoring with 11 points. The JV squad’s record now stands at 3-1 in League play.

Flipper Footnotes: Once again, SM’s gym was packed with spectators, thank you! To SM’s cheerleaders: wow, you’re filled with energy! This week’s home games: V 12/16 scrimmage vs. Madison and 12/17 League game vs. Nazareth. Both teams then travel to Fontebonne on 12/19 for league competition.
