Smoke Forces AA Plane Back To JFK

Smoke Forces AA Plane Back To JFK

An American Airline MD80 on the way to St. Louis returned to Kennedy Airport shortly after takeoff last Monday when a passenger reported that his eyes were irritated from some sort of smoke and the crew was unable to explain an unidentified odor in the cabin.

Flight 1683, with 103 passengers and five crew returned to Kennedy without incident and the passengers were put onto other planes to continue their journey.

"The pilot elected to turn back after a passenger reported the eye irritation and the unidentified smell," a spokesperson for American Airlines told reporters.

This is the latest in a series of incidents that have forced airliners to return to Kennedy after takeoff. While most of these planes landed over the Five Towns rather than the Rockaway peninsula, most of them took off from Runway 31L, which takes them right over the west end of Rockaway.
