Sanders Launches Major Merchant Initiative

Councilman James Sanders Jr., and the Business Outreach Center (BOC) Network, Inc., in a joint effort to aid Far Rockaway small business and entrepreneurs, recently launched a major merchant initiative. "I have been working with residents, merchants and community-based organizations in identifying and researching avenues to help stimulate overall economic growth. The BOC Merchant Initiative is one of the first fruits of that effort," said Councilman Sanders.

Under the Merchant Initiative, BOC, a non-profit small business development organization with over 10 years experience of delivering business services in New York City, will link Far Rockaway small business and entrepreneurs to public and private technical assistance to provide business plan development and loan packaging, business start-up/expansion assistance, private and government procurement opportunities, entrepreneurial development, marketing strategies, employee and product development.

"An important part of the Merchant Initiative is the Wage Subsidy Program," said BOC Consultant Annette Cohen. "It will provide wage subsidy assistance to businesses negatively impacted by the events of 9/11/01 or who hire individuals who lost their jobs as a result of the negative impact of 9/11/01 on their place of employment." Eligible businesses may receive wage subsidies for 50%-60% of salary/wages up to $25.00 per hour. The subsidies are for a 90-day period, with an additional 10% for businesses that retain the subsidized employee for 180 days.

"The creation and growth of businesses and jobs led by our entrepreneurs and working families is critical to building strong neighborhoods and business centers. It is through our efforts of working together as a community with groups like the Business Outreach Center Network, Inc. that we will make this a reality," said Councilman Sanders.
