Boyle ‘s Book Becomes Weiner’s Holiday Present

Boyle 's Book Becomes Weiner's Holiday Present

What is every member of Congress getting for the holidays?  A copy of "Braving The Waves ~ Rockaway Rises And Rises Again," by Rockaway resident Kevin Boyle.

Congressman Anthony Weiner has ordered 435 copies of the new book to give to each of his colleagues in Congress.

"Braving The Waves" is the story of those who raced to save others on 9/11 and then did the same when Flight 587 crashed in their own Rockaway neighborhood---a resolute salt air hamlet with more than its share of heroes.

The book follows firefighters such as Mike Moran---who told Osama bin laden to kiss his royal Irish ass; and George Johnson, one of the three firefighters in the famous flag raising photo; and Chief Pete Hayden who survived both tower collapses and on his first day off in two months watched Flight 587 come apart in the sky---and then supervised operations at the crash site.

There are harrowing and riveting accounts of firefighters such as Matt Tansey and Tom Carroll surviving against odds.

"Congressman Weiner's gesture is very generous." Boyle said. "Perhaps his colleagues in Congress will learn that these aren't just Rockaway heroes---but American heroes," Boyle said.

While the book is populated with many firefighters it's also a story of Rockaway ---its history, its strong communal ties, and its ability to bounce back, to rise again. Boyle weaves a story that reveals ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

For his gift giving, Weiner waves off any praise. "Politics aside, members of Congress should remember that America's strength stems from people in places like Rockaway. Kevin Boyle's book reflects the best of America---its strength and resolve; its heroism, its generosity. This should be required reading."

Braving The Waves-Rockaway Rises And Rises Again is available at The Gift is Love, Sammy's and at The Wave. Books sold out of The Wave newspaper office will benefit The Graybeards and the Rockaway Museum.
