Stella Maris Starts League Play With Victories

Stella Maris’ Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball teams each tipped off their League schedule this past week. On Monday, Dec 2nd the Varsity traveled to Catherine McAuley High School, in Brooklyn, where they defeated McAuley 72-26.

The Senior squad was led by MaryGrace Brady (15 pts., 5 rbs.) and Jennifer Anglero (14 pts., 5 rbs.). Cynthia Galanos chipped in with 11 pts. and 8 rbs. Liz Jablonski and Natalia Alexander each scored 8 points. Marybeth Raphael contributed 6 points to go along with her 7 assists and Sara Massimino scored 4 points plus dished for 4 assists. The Lady Flippers combined for 23 assists in the game.

SM’s Junior Varsity squad hosted St. Joseph’s High School (Brooklyn) on Tuesday, December 3rd. SM registered a 45-25 victory. The Lady Flippers were led by the aggressive play and full court hustle of point guard Catherine Rudden, Jennifer Greene, Erin Casey, Maureen Carey and Kelly McKinley. Major contributions by Kara Bobby, Hope Johnson and Barbara Krulish secured the victory for SM. SM’s relentless man-to-man defense was the catalyst as the team took a 5 point half time edge and saw it inflate to up to 25 at some points.

Stella’s entire roster also includes: Danielle Marquez, Damaris Rivera, Erin Sugrue, Mary Carson, Christina Comis, Alyce Miraglia, Brittany O’Connor, Ariel O’Neill and Caroline Weeks.

This year’s squad highlights 13 freshmen (out of 17 players) and in his first year as a Stella Maris coach Mr. John Raphael. Mr. Raphael, a veteran sideline patroller for over 20 years, is no stranger to SM Basketball. One daughter, Marybeth, is SM’s Varsity point guard and is currently in her junior year. John’s older daughter Katelyn, graduated from SM in 2000. Katelyn was a member of the repeat Diocesan "D" Championship teams and a 1,000-point scorer for her Alma Mater. Ms. Raphael now attends and competes for Manhattenville College. Stella Maris is happy welcome to Mr. Raphael to her coaching ranks!

Flipper footnotes: MB its Ok to smile now! JW: half court is the huge line in the middle of the court! CG: can you hear me now? LJ: or should I say Forrest? JV: congrats on your first win. You also won the "we packed the gym the most" award. Good showing there since V thought they had done a good job in that department last week. Alum sighting of the week: the McCann sisters (Theresa and Grace) seen cheering and fanning the flames for SM’s JV team and power forward Maureen Carey!
