Stan’s Pepper Steppers Stomp To Double Dutch Victory

On Saturday, November 9, 2002, Sorrentino Recreation Center hosted the 4th Annual Back to School Double Dutch Tournament. The overall winners were Sorrentino’s renowned Stan’s Pepper Steppers, who came in first place in the United States Youth Games on August 2nd, in Newark, New Jersey. Jumpers Delight from Brooklyn, coached by Katisha Simpkins, (a former Pepper Stepper) took second place overall, and the Jammin Jumpers, also from Brooklyn and coached by Ruth Payne, took third place overall.

It was a compulsory and speed tournament with lots of excitement. Stan’s Baby Pepper Steppers won top speed honors for 3rd thru 5th grade divisions. The team’s members are: LaaâNeisha Jones, Monet Davis, Alaisya Woodard, and Tylee Smith, coached by Yatte Brown. 

Top Speed Honors for 6th & 7th grade divisions was awarded to Stan’s Jr Pepper Steppers. The team members are: Denise Clemonds, Cherise Bartow, Porchia Woodard, and Tanisha Holiday, coached by Stan Brown. 

Top speed honors for the 8th grade divisions were awarded to Jumpers Delight: Jazmine, Shalanda, Jennifer, and Illaquana. They are coached by former Pepper Stepper Katisha Simpkins. 

The #1 speed team for the tournament was Stan’s Jr. Pepper Steppers. Participants representing Stan’s Pepper Steppers included: Jocelyn Castaneda, Shamika Gonzales, Ahzharge Gilchrist, Jackie Francis, Arielle Newton, Courtney Miles, Katherine Rocha, Robieshia Davis, Francois Nicolas, Terae Walker, Kimberly Taylor, Shaasia Fisher, Tyasia Meyers, Johnnysha Ramos, Cherise Bartow, Denise Clemmonds, Tanisha Holiday, Shanae Wallace, Paula Robinson, Muniyra Moore, Dominique Bacote, Antonia Medina, Franchelle Reed, Judith Nicolas, Precious McCoy, Melissa John, Jazmyn Boone, Alisha Thompson, Ayani Davis, Tantania Harding, Dominique Woods, Courtney Howard, Bria Drake, Jessica Alexander, Kyana Bartow, Laa’Neisha Jones, Tylee Smith, Monet Davis, Alaisya Woodard, Porchia Woodard, and Deidre Morrissey. 

Junior officials consisted of LaQuasha Brown, Glennda Thompkins, Ruby Mejia, Camay Cardwell, Camilla Ensley, Deandrea Jordan, and Lorraine Ramsey. Officials consisted of Yatte Brown, Carol Walker & Tiffany Taylor. Special thanks goes out to the Sorrentino Center Manager, Mr. Bernard Robinson, the Sorrentino Recreation Staff, all the parents, family, and friends of the Rockaway community that made this event a success. The next tournament will be the Mommy and Me Family Classic on December 14, 2002 at Sorrentino Recreation Center from 10am to 1pm.
