Security Guard

Philip Alexander, born in Berbice, Guyana passed away on November 25, 2002.

Philip was employed as a security guard and was a member of the Restoration Temple Assembly of God. He was an Usher, a Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Hospital Ministry.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Nora; brothers, Wilfred and Edgar; sisters, and sisters, Elizabeth and Olive.

He is survived by his daughters, Jacqueline Patricia; sister, Elfrieda Henry; 6 grandchildren; and a host of other family members.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inc. was held at Rosehill Cemetery in Linden, New Jersey.

Marie Barry
Loved By Many

Marie Barry passed away on Nov 28 after a battle with cancer at her home in Tamarac, Florida. Marie lived in Rockaway for more than 30 years and raised her family there prior to relocating to Florida in 1986.

She was preceded in death by her late husband Edward Barry and granddaughter Nicole Ross. She is survived by her son Edward Barry; daughters Marie Dronia, Dorothy Burkhardt, Regina Barry and Janet Barry; daughter-in-law Linda Barry; sons-in-law, Alfred Dronia and Billy Burkhardt; grandsons, Bryan Ross, George Dronia and Nicholas Burkhardt; and granddaughters, Halena Dronia, Meredith Ross and Kaitland Burkhardt.

Funeral arrangements were handled under direction of Kraeer Funeral Services in Coral Springs, Florida.

Lumisha Barton
Homemaker

Lumisha Barton, born in Branchville, South Carolina died on November 18, 2002.

Lumisha spent the majority of her life as a homemaker.

She is survived by her nephews, Michael and Arthur; niece, Alline; 18 grandnieces and nephews; 14 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home, Inc. was held at All Saints Cemetery in Great Neck, New York.

Dorothy I. Caldwell
Teacher

Dorothy I. Caldwell, born in Brooklyn, was an 80-year resident of the Belle Harbor community who died on November 29, 2002. She was residing in Daytona Beach, Florida at the time of her death.

Dorothy was employed as a teacher, and was an Eastern Star Graduate of Savage School, Columbia University. She also ran the Vacation Day Camp of P.S. 114 for many years.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Caldwell.

She is survived by her daughter, Vivien Devins; son-in-law, Richard Devins; and 1 grandchild.

Gerard P. Egan
Former Rockawayite

Gerard (Jerry) P. Egan, born in New York City, passed away on November 25, 2002 at the age of 53.

A former long time resident of Rockaway, Gerard was employed at Tagsons Paper Mill in Mechanicville, New York. He also spent time working as a cook at the Roaring Brook Ranch in Lake George, New York, and was an avid outdoorsman.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Mary Egan.

He is survived by his son, Tobias Egan; brother, Eugene Egan; stepmother, Patricia Egan; and sisters, Patricia Campbell, Veronica Egan, Debra Lomgro, Theresa Mohr, and Christine McCabe; 3 nephews; and 2 nieces.

Funeral arrangements were handled under the direction of the Brewer Funeral Home in Lake Luzerne, New York.

Manuel Fernandez
World War II Veteran

Manuel Fernandez, born in Spain, was a life long resident of the Far Rockaway community who passed away on December 1, 2002. He was 95.

Manuel was an active parishioner at St. Mary's Star of The Sea Roman Catholic Church in Far Rockaway. He worked for many years at George Smith & Sons Auto Parts, and he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II, while stationed in Europe. Manuel also was a member of the Far Rockaway Post #423 American Legion, and the Stella Maris Council #378, Knight of Columbus.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn (nee Valentine).

Interment under the direction of the Meserole Funeral Home Inc. was held at St. Mary's Cemetery in North Lawrence.

Catherine E. Gallagher
Cherished By Many

Catherine E. Gallagher died on December 1, 2002 at the age of 89.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Francis L. Sr.

She is survived by her children, Mary Meade, Drury, Frank, Cathy Egan, Tommy, Toni Schmeelk, and Peter and Patti Arenberg; 26 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and sister, Rose Harris.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc. was held at Calvary Cemetery.

Ellen Hanna
Rockaway Park Resident

Ellen (nee Sieger) Hanna, born in New Jersey, was a 63-year resident of Rockaway Park who passed away on November 27, 2002.

Ellen worshipped at St. Francis de Sales Church and was a native of Mount Holly, New Jersey.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hanna; parents, Theodore and Mary Sieger (nee Hughes); son, Joseph Hanna; and sister, Mary Hermann.

She is survived by her daughters, Margaret and Mary Ellen Hanna and Eileen Macklin; son, Thomas Hanna; daughters-in-law, Kathleen and Nancy Hanna; 7 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc. was held at Calvary Cemetery.

Richard Louis Metzger
Vietnam Veteran

Richard Louis Metzger, of Kingsland, Georgia, coming from Rockaway, died on November 26, 2002 at the age of 54.

Richard was an employee of Voice Stream T-Mobile in Jacksonville, Florida. During the course of his life, he was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts Troop 128; served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War; worked for the CIA for 10 years (serving in the U.S. and Australia); was Commander of American Legion Post 272; and ranked Captain in the Georgia State Defense Force, 5th Battalion-4th Brigade in Kingsland, Georgia.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Murray Metzger; daughter, Laurie Anne; father, Bert Metzger; sister, Nancy Lee; brothers, William and James; 4 nieces; 1 nephew; and 2 great-nieces.

Interment under the direction of the Allison Memorial Chapel was held at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Mary's, Georgia.

Shirley Ann Brown-Perry
Evangelist

Evangelist Shirley Ann Brown-Perry, born in Orangeburg, South Carolina died on November 14, 2002.

Shirley was employed as a City Custodian for many years. She was a member of the Starlight Church of God in Christ, and then joined the First Church of God in Christ in St. Albans.

She is preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Brown; and aunt, Mary Pryor.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Willis Perry; son, Brandon; sisters, Sherry L. Ferrella and Lisa A. Brown; brothers, Michael Brown and Elder John Brown; and a host of other relatives.

Interment under the direction of Jeremiah C. Gaffney Funeral Home Inc. was held in South Carolina.

Elizabeth F. Tansey
Belle Harbor Resident

Elizabeth F. Tansey, born in Brooklyn, was an 80-year resident of Belle Harbor who died on December 4, 2002.

Elizabeth worshipped at St. Camillus Church and was involved with many aspects of the Belle Harbor community.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Patrick; brother, Michael O'Donohue; and sister, Josephine Indelecardo.

She is survived by her sons, Patrick and John; grandchildren, Patrick, Ann Marie, Matthew, Theresa, John, Robert, and Jean Marie; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will take place at the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home on Friday, December 6, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m.

A special mass will be held on December 7, 10 a.m., at St. Camillus Church.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc. will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

Doreen M. White
Dearly Missed

Doreen M. White, a long time resident of Far Rockaway, passed away on November 28, 2002.

Doreen was a former employee at St. John's Episcopal Hospital's Dietary Department.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. White; brother George Golliver; sister, Florence (Ponci) Mead; and parents, John and Florence Golliver.

She is survived by her son, John White; daughters, Debra Pacheco and husband William, and Darleen Clampitt and husband Arthur; grandchildren, Melissa and Alicia Pacheco, Richard White, Danielle Clampitt; Sister Leona Coppolino; and a host of many other family members and friends.

Interment under the direction of Denis S. O'Connor, Inc. was held at Calverton National Cemetery.
