Florida Power and Light (FPL) Energy will host an open house for the proposed Jamaica Bay Peaking Facility on Monday, December 9, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., with a second session running from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The event will be held at the Association for the Help of Retarded Children (AHRC) facility, located at 23-55 Healy Avenue in Bayswater.

"This forum is for community residents to learn about the proposed project, discuss issues that are of concern to them, and exchange
ideas with the project development team," said FLP spokesperson Deb Colton.

The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation public air permit hearing will be held on Thursday evening, December 12, at 7:00 p.m., in the Far Rockaway High School auditorium.

The Jamaica Bay Peaking Facility will be located adjacent to the existing Bayswater Peaking Facility on the KeySpan Far Rockaway Power Station site. The  need  for additional generation on the Far Rockaway peninsula has been determined by the Long Island Power Authority to meet the continued growth of the Rockaways in both new development and electrical usage.

"Following a review by all applicable agencies, a determination will be made as to whether the facility will be built. If approved, construction will begin in January 2003 with the peaking facility available to serve the community this summer," said Colton.

FPL Energy is the nation's leader in wind energy and a leading independent producer of clean energy from natural gas, solar energy and hydroelectric power, generating more than 80 percent of its power from clean and renewable sources.
