Needs To ‘Walk The Walk’

Needs To 'Walk The Walk'

Dear Editor;

Several weeks ago I attended the anniversary of the crash of flight 587. It was truly a gut wrenching experience seeing all those people who had lost so much- it brought tears to my eyes. As a resident of Belle Harbor and Neponsit these past 23 years I've some idea of what it is like to live in such a beautiful area and yet see it gradually decline in quality of living because of the insensitivity of the FAA and the lack of leadership from our elected officials.

Senators Schumer and Clinton are totally of no use to the Rockaway residents on the issue of the continuing barrage of aircraft flying over the Peninsula. Rep. Weiner {who should live here and experience the continuous noise of aircraft} said at the last community meeting on the subject that the FAA has "substantially kept its promise to reduce flights over the west end." Weiner will buy anything the FAA has to offer. He obviously can "Talk the Talk" but stumbles dramatically when trying to "Walk the Walk."

All Rockaway residents know that these planes do not fly the patterns over the bay and out past Tilden. And they do so to save on fuel. Planes fly over some nights till 1 a.m. and then on and off till 5:30 a.m. What's going in the skies over our homes is in a sense a form of terrorism. Kudos to voicer Andrew Hasson and Rachel Edwards for speaking their minds and encouraging the truth. The hard working, heroic, yet sometimes too easy going people of our home town deserve better.

KEN HIRSCHY
