Information On Easing Holiday Travel For Disabled

The Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association is offering free single copies of two pamphlets, which can make busy holiday travel around the country and in New York City hassle-free for individuals with disabilities. "Accessible Air Travel: A Guide For People With Disabilities" and "How To Ride New York City’s Wheelchair Accessible Buses" may be obtained by calling the Association’s publications request line at 1-800-444-0120, or ordered online at www.epva.org.

"Accessible Air Travel" describes the major requirements of the 1986 federal Air Carrier Access Act, which calls upon both commercial air carriers and airports to provide specific services to travelers with disabilities. This pamphlet covers the reservations, security screening, and aircraft boarding processes in detail, and it concludes with important information for the consumer about addressing violations of the law. "Accessible Air Travel" is updated with a new insert about the application of the law to foreign air carriers, as well as information on new accessible boarding requirements for passengers with disabilities to smaller commercial aircraft.

Over 65,000 trips per month are taken by travelers with mobility impairments on the wheelchair lift and ramp-equipped fixed-route buses operated by MTA New York City Transit., and "How To Ride New York City’s Wheelchair Accessible Buses" is filled with facts to acquaint both visitors and new local passengers with disabilities about using the bus system successfully. This pamphlet includes illustrated procedures to board side-door, lift-equipped accessible buses; information on fare payment for disabled passengers; and, important telephone numbers for travel-related services.
