SM Lady Flippers Tips Off Campaign With Win

Stella Maris’ Varsity Basketball team tipped off their 2002-2003 season with a November 15th home victory over Tottenville High School (Staten Island). All 10 squad members saw ample playing time as the Lady Flippers secured their first season victory by a score of 49-40.

The win was a great mix of returning players (5) and "rookies" (5) coming through when needed, finding each other on the court and taking the first steps toward gelling as a team.

SM took an early 8-2 lead and never relinquished the lead throughout the contest. Junior, point guard Marybeth Raphael and Freshman Jennifer Anglero provided the initial surge for a 14-6 end-of-the-quarter score.

The second stanza can best be described as a "race" to the foul line. Both teams shot a combined 22 foul shots but Tottenville’s eye was sharper as they stroked 9/13 and SM was disappointing with 5/9. SM’s edge had grown to 12 with 1:40 left due to a 3-minute spurt started off by a backcourt steal and fastbreak conversion by Jen including Sophomore Cynthia Galanos.

The Lady Flippers started the third with an 8-point edge. That lead was quickly cut in half. An epidemic of sloppy play resulted in all three of SM’s frontcourt starters going to the bench with foul trouble. That combined with some mental lapses shifted the rebounding edge to the Tottenville Pirates.

To start the fourth, both teams traded early baskets. Then Natalie DeSanctis hit her first trey of the year from the right wing to give the Flippers some breathing room at 34- 28 to win the game.

For the game: Natalia Alexander led with 15 points, Jen Anglero had 13 and Marybeth Raphael had 8 points and 7 assists.

Flipper Footnotes: the turnout last Thursday was great and much appreciated! MCC it’s great to have you back with the team, where you belong. JA the gray hairs are piling up, all ready. NA: here’s a tip…you need your sneakers before the game starts. NS: I’m sure you know now that the play is designed for YOU to SHOOT! MR and ND: it was nice to see you smiling!
