Outreach Project: The 21st Annual Metropolitan Luncheon

As a member of the Board of Directors of Outreach Development Corporation, I attended the 21st Annual Metropolitan Luncheon for Outreach Project held on Thursday, November 14, at the Sheraton Center in Manhattan.

Outreach Project is truly blessed with an outstanding leader - Kathleen Riddle.  She is the wind beneath the wings of this vital organization.  It is through her constant devotion, sincere commitment and dedicated service that Outreach Project continues to grow.  Kathleen Riddle is a visionary professional.

Outreach Project addresses drug and alcohol substance abuse through providing the following services: (a)  adolescent residential services in Ridgewood, Queens and Brentwood, Long Island;  (b) adolescent day and outpatient treatment services in Richmond Hill, Queens;  (c)  court intervention services in Kew Gardens, Queens;  (d)  adult alcohol treatment services including DWI Counseling in Richmond Hill, Queens and Greenpoint, Brooklyn;  (e) adult substance abuse services in Bellport, Long Island and Richmond Hill, Queens;  (f)  women's intensive day treatment in Bellport, Long Island and Richmond Hill, Queens; and (g)  case management services for HIV positive individuals.  Outreach Training Institute also has a very highly regarded academic program to train individuals to become a drug or alcohol abuse counselor.  In addition, during this year Outreach opened a Second Opportunity School (SOS) program.  This is a joint project with the New York City Board of Education and provides educational and therapeutic services for adolescents who have been suspended from New York City Middle Schools.

At this years luncheon, Outreach honored three outstanding individuals with the 2002 annual service award:  John Pegno, Edward Riguardi and John J. Sweeney.

John Pegno is the President of A J Pegno Construction Corporation which is a major public works general contractor in the New York City region.  John is the Vice President of the General Contractors Association and will be the President of this group in 2003.

Edward Riguardi is the Managing Director in the New York Transactions Group of Jones, Land and LaSalle and is the senior oversight officer of the New York Metro areas management portfolio.  He is considered the "Dean of Property Management in New York".  He has served as the Chairman of Colliers A.B.R. and President / Founder of Koeppel, Tener, Riguardi.  He has served as a consultant to Exxon, American Express, Bank of New York, Citibank, Equitable Life, Merrill Lynch and John Hancock, where he coordinated the asset management for their real estate portfolios.  He is a member of the Board of Governors and the Executive Committee of the Real Estate Board of New York.

John J. Sweeney is continuing to serve in his third term as the President of the AFL-CIO.  In 1995, he was elected as the President on a platform of revitalizing the 13 million member federation representing 66 affiliated unions.  Prior to this he was the head of the Service Employees International Union.  When he assumed that position there were 623,000 members.  Under his leadership it grew to 1.1 million members.  In 1996 John Sweeney wrote "America Needs A Raise, Fighting For Economic Security and Justice".  John Sweeney also co-authored "Solutions for the New Work Force and co-edited the UNA-USA Economic Policy Council's "Family and Work: Bridging the Gap".

John Pegno, Edward Riguardi and John Sweeney were honored by Outreach Project for their contribution and commitment to helping Outreach continue to "Build Healthy Lives for Children and Families".

Please tune in on Monday, December 2, at 5:30 p.m. to Channel 56 to view the Rally for Peace in Israel which was taped by Michael Benn.  Mike is the outstanding, well-known producer of "Eyes of the Irish" which airs each Monday.  The Rally for Peace in Israel was a very important and vital meeting.  Those addressing us were Rabbi Allan Blaine, Monsignor Martin Geraghty, Rabbi M. Berkowtiz and Rabbi M. May.  I chaired this event with Jack King.
