BC Ponies Playoff Bound In Thrilling Win

By Brian McMahon

By Brian McMahon

The Beach Channel Ponies finished their regular season Sunday with a thrilling fourth quarter victory over Wantaugh. Trailing 13-6 going into the fourth quarter, the Shamrocks scored on a 60-yard screen pass to Joe Parisi to tie the score.

The defense held the Wantaugh offense by forcing them to punt. George Conklin, John Cunningham, Richie Martin, Seamus Kell, Stevie Sugden and John McCarthy led the BC defense.

The Shamrock offense received the punt with a little more than 2 minutes left in the game. Quarterback Kevin "Bubba" McMahon led his offense down the field with outstanding passing plays to John Burke and John Hanning. A tough run by Seamus Kelly to the 4-yard line set up an opportunity for a final game winning play.

With Broad Channel on their feet, and two second remaining on the clock, McMahon hit Joe Parisi in the corner of the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. The play brought head coach John Hanning to his knees.

The Ponies finished their season with an 8-2 record. The season has been such a success due to a great team effort from first year players Sean Cordes and John Burke to veterans like John Hanning, Chris Connor, Joe LaPorta, James Kroog, Phil D’Agostino, Nick Mastros, Johnny Alite, Chris Timmons and all the Shamrock players. The ponies will head into the playoffs facing a tough Lindenhurst team on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Memorial Field. Come out and see more exciting football!
