Apology To Redfern

Apology To Redfern

Dear Editor;

On Monday, October 28, 2002 a meeting was convened at P.S. 104 by the Community School District 27 to examine rezoning of the Rockaway schools. During this meeting it was proposed by a member of my staff, that the children currently residing in the Redfern Houses would continue to be bused to three schools, as is now the practice, as the new school (P.S. 253) would become a low-performing school.

If any member of the Board, or persons residing in the Redfern Houses, or anywhere in the Rockaway community, District 27 or the city were offended by those remarks, I offer my sincere and humble apologies. As Superintendent, I accept full responsibility for what was stated at the meeting; however, it does not reflect my mission in leading this District.

It is my goal and mission to ensure that all our children are afforded an environment suitable for learning, with qualified and motivated teachers to teach them, a curriculum to challenge them, and a Principal to lead them. The record of this administration, working in cooperation with the Board and community members, has borne this out. We have a long way to go, and many challenges to face, but be assured that by working together as a team for our children, we will succeed.

At the next zoning meeting, plans will be presented addressing and reflecting the concerns of the entire Rockaway community.

MATTHEW BROMME
COMMUNITY SUPERINTENDENT
