Hazmat Situation Forces Nursing Home Evacuation

A 10,000-gallon oil spill in the basement of Ocean Promenade Nursing Home on Beach 113 Street forced the evacuation of nearly 100 residents last Tuesday. The residents were at first split between the Park Nursing Home and the Promenade Nursing Home and were later transferred to the nursing home at the Peninsula Hospital Center. Firefighters from the Hazardous Materials Unit (pictured) entered the building to find out the dangers involved with the spill and to remediate them. Health officials told The Wave that several thousand gallons of the oil were missing and it was feared that they leached into the sand under the building. It was unknown as to how long the residents would be out of the building.
